Controlling your grip pressure for chips and pitches

There are many ways to control the flight of your chips and pitches from around the green. Two of the most obvious ways are (1) By the loft of the club you use and (2) where you position the ball in your stance. There is another key factor that many golfers don’t consider when controlling the height of their short shots and that is the grip pressure they apply during their shot. The more pressure you apply, the less your wrists will hinge and the lower your ball will fly. As a teacher, I emphasize firm grip pressure in chip and run shots because I want the ball to stay low. When I want a player to gain more height in a short shot, I emphasize light grip pressure. A prime example of light grip pressure would be what is needed to hit a flop shot from around the green.

So experiment with your grip pressure around the green and you will be able to control the flight of your shots more effectively. If you need additional help with your short game come and see me and I’ll get you on the right track for a better short game.
